Good News! Application Deadline Extended to November 8!
New Deadline: Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 11:59 PM
Great news for pianists, instrumentalists, teachers, and families! Due to continued interest in our 2026 Bach Festival International, the Sonare International Piano Festival has extended the application deadline from October 31 to November 8, 2026, at 11:59 PM.
This deadline extension provides an additional opportunity for musicians worldwide to prepare their best performances and participate in one of our most educationally rewarding annual events.
Why Participate in the Bach Festival International?
There is perhaps no composer whose music offers such extraordinary educational benefits across every stage of musical development as Johann Sebastian Bach.
From the charming dances of the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach to the intellectually demanding inventions, suites, preludes, fugues, and monumental keyboard works, Bach’s music provides a remarkable journey of artistic and technical growth.
1. Something for Every Level of Musical Development
One of the greatest advantages of studying Bach is the extraordinary range of his repertoire. Young beginners can discover the elegance of Baroque dances, while intermediate students progress through the Two- and Three-Part Inventions. Advanced musicians encounter the formidable challenges of the French and English Suites, Partitas, Well-Tempered Clavier, and Toccatas.
There is always another musical and intellectual challenge waiting!
2. Develop True Independence of the Hands
For pianists, few composers offer a more effective foundation for developing independence between the hands. Bach’s polyphonic writing requires each hand to function as an independent musical voice, often carrying equally important melodic ideas.
Rather than merely accompanying the right hand, the left hand becomes an active participant in a musical conversation. This develops coordination, listening, control, and the ability to shape several musical lines simultaneously. This is also true for instrumentalists with the capability to only play one or two notes at a time. The implied voices within a single line challenge the demands on the instrumentalist. Bach on violin or cello is very difficult. Ask any professional!
These are skills that benefit pianists and instrumentalists throughout their musical lives.
3. Train the Mind as Well as the Fingers
Studying Bach is an intellectual adventure. His compositions demand an understanding of musical architecture, harmonic relationships, counterpoint, phrasing, and the interaction of independent voices.
Students learn not simply to play notes, but to understand how music works. This analytical awareness becomes an invaluable foundation for interpreting composers of every historical period.
4. Receive Valuable Feedback from Independent Adjudicators
One of the most important benefits of the Bach Festival International is the opportunity to receive evaluations from accomplished musicians outside the student’s immediate educational community.
Our adjudicators are distinguished artists and educators who bring fresh perspectives and independent professional judgment to every performance.
For teachers and parents, this is especially valuable. An outside assessment can affirm a student’s progress, identify areas for further development, and offer encouragement from musicians who are not involved in the student’s regular instruction.
The 2026 adjudicating panel includes:
- Sean Terada Yang
- Dominic Doutney
- Gabriel Merrill-Steskal
- Kelli Stephens
- Moyi Liu
- Isaac Berglind
5. Perfect Your Performance Through Recording
Unlike a live competition, our online format gives participants the opportunity to record their performances and submit the version that best represents their preparation and artistry.
This process is educational in itself!
Just as a painter continually refines a canvas, musicians can listen critically to their recordings, recognize details that need improvement, and work toward a more polished interpretation.
Recording encourages patience, self-evaluation, precision, and artistic responsibility. Students often discover that the process of preparing an excellent recording teaches them as much as the final evaluation.
6. Participate from Anywhere in the World
The Bach Festival International welcomes pianists and instrumentalists from around the world.
Our online format eliminates the expense and logistical challenges of travel while providing access to an international educational and competitive experience.
Whether you are an aspiring young musician, an advanced student, or an experienced performer, this festival offers an opportunity to celebrate one of history’s greatest musical minds.
Why Bach? Why Now?
The music of Johann Sebastian Bach is not simply a historical subject to be studied. It is a living foundation of musical education.
His works cultivate discipline without sacrificing imagination, technical mastery without sacrificing expression, and intellectual understanding without sacrificing emotion.
For teachers, Bach provides a clear and progressive educational pathway. For students, his music offers challenges that evolve alongside their abilities. For audiences, it reveals an astonishing world of musical invention and beauty.
A serious musical education is difficult to imagine without Bach.
Don’t Miss the Extended Deadline!
We encourage teachers to take advantage of this additional week to help their students prepare and submit their strongest performances.
